Amazing Toyota Commercial

While the auto industry is in shambles in America and indeed facing some challenges in Japan as well, Japan automaker Toyoya is managing at least to keep kicking out some solid advertising campaigns. This is a stark contrast with America where car ads have been in decline (remember the Superbowl?).

Here's one example of a creative ad campaign by Toyota. You gotta admit that this one is pretty clever!



Can GM or Ford top that these days? Don't hold your breath...

Is it just me, or does pantomime sound like a type of medicine you you'd put on your legs for a rash?  Ah, nevermind...

Check out these two guys who recently appeared on Japanese TV. Their skit is pretty amazing and they look like they've worked on this routine for quite a while to get their timing just right. Give the video a look and let me know what you think:

I'm thinking there must be something in the water for things to be this strange. But I hope it never changes. These commercials are awesome!

Funny Arnold Schwarzenneger Commercials from Japan

In the spirit of Bill Murray in Lost in Translation comes another batch of unearthed Western-celebrity-in-Japan commercials. You can watch them all over on short attention span, but here's a quick preview. This one is probably my favorite because Arnold has to mispronouce the letter "V" just as Japan does. Or at least, pronounce it in Japanese. He does a pretty good job.

But overall the ad, like most commercials in Japan, is 100% certifiably nuts!

Fundoshi Underwear now available for Women

Usually only for males, Fundoshi are traditional Japanese underwear made from cotton. Of course you're not going to see them in any Calvin Klein shops these days, but they are still around for anyone who wants to sport pre-war undergarments.

I just came across this tv clip, showing that fundoshi are not available for women as well. Of course it's a little different, and it's two piece as well providing a bikini top of sorts as well. Ladies, would you ever wear this one? It does look very comfortable. Very loose. Might be great for lounging around at home, watching soap operas and eating corn chips!

Living in the Po' House in Japan is not so bad

I was watching tv the other day, and I happened to see a commercial for a very unfortunately named company. It's a sort of luxury housing company and they look like they do some very impressive work, as you can see from the picture below.

They're called Po Haus.

And I'm sure at some point someone is going to tell them that in America, living in the po' house (i.e. poor house) is not such a good thing. You can check out their website at pohaus.com.

Monkey in Japan Teaches its Baby to Floss!

Yet another ridiculous video coming to you from Japan. Have a look at this clever monkey flossing its teeth with a hair. I'm not sure how a monkey figured out how to do this, because personally I'd venture to say that most human beings haven't even figured out how to floss. So this monkey is definitely ahead of the pack.

Check out the baby in the video as well. Hopefully he'll learn from his mom and start flossing too (I assume it's the mother given the size of the nipples, though it's possible that it could be just a big-nippled father). Never too early to learn!

WTF?! Japan opens a Beer with a Helicopter

This is the best thing ever! I really want to go drinking with these people. In this video, some guys in Japan attach a regular bottle opener to the pontoon (I think that's the right word, someone correct me if I'm wrong) of a helicopter. The pilot then slowly approaches the beer with the helicopter, and tries to pop the cap off.

If anyone knows these guys, please have them call me!

The Origins of Spiderman, in 70s Japan

If you enjoyed my recent post about a very strange Japanese Spiderman clip, you're going to love this.

Here is the story of Spiderman's origin, as it happened according to the Japanese. And you thought it was a radio-active spider...

The story initially focuses on our hero Takuya, and his father the Professor. When the earth is invaded by evil aliens, the Professor is killed and Takuya is stabbed in the neck. But a benevolent alien from the Planet Spider (Yes, the Planet Spider!) saves Takuya by injecting him with spider extract.

It is after that, that Takuya becomes Spiderman. He wears some kind of gadget on his wrist, and when he presses a button on it, a Spiderman costume shoots out:

When Spiderman goes on to fight back against the aliens who killed his father, we find that he has even more super-cool powers. Or rather, super-cool accessories.

Turns out the Spider-mobile is also a Transformer too! (Does it remind you of Voltron?)
